How to Make Cold Foam at Home
Nonfat milk · 15–20 seconds · Handheld or electric frother
Cold foam is frothed cold milk — no heat — spooned over iced coffee. The easiest version: ¼ cup cold nonfat milk, 1 teaspoon syrup, 15–20 seconds with a handheld frother. Method based on A Couple Cooks.
How do you make cold foam at home?
Start with cold nonfat milk
Use about ¼ cup of chilled nonfat (skim) milk. Its higher protein relative to fat gives the thickest, most stable cold foam; 1% and 2% also work. Whole milk gives a looser texture.
Add a little sweetener
Stir in about 1 teaspoon of simple syrup or vanilla syrup, plus a dash of vanilla if you like.
Froth 15–20 seconds
With a handheld frother, start with the whisk at the bottom of a narrow jar, switch it on and slowly raise it toward the surface. Stop when the foam is thick and pourable. With an electric frother, use the cold setting.
Pour over cold brew
Spoon or pour the foam over cold brew, iced coffee or an iced latte. It sits on top and slowly blends in.
Which milk makes the best cold foam?
- Nonfat (skim): the thickest, most stable foam. 1% and 2% also froth well.
- Whole milk: richer but looser — it won't hold the same stiff texture.
- Barista-edition oat milk: the best non-dairy option, lighter than skim foam. Regular oat milk is looser.
- Almond milk: often doesn't hold cold foam well.
- Sweet cream cold foam: a richer version made with milk, heavy cream and vanilla syrup.
Which frothers can make cold foam?
| Frother | Type | Froth Score™ | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breville Milk Café | Electric Countertop | 67 | $180–$200 |
| Instant Pot 4-in-1 | Electric Countertop | 58 | $30–$45 |
| Zulay Milk Boss | Handheld Wand | 50 | $9–$15 |
| Aeroccino 4 | Electric Countertop | 40 | $110–$130 |
| Smeg MFF01 | Electric Countertop | 35 | $200–$260 |
The cheapest way in is a handheld wand like the Zulay Milk Boss (about $9). The Instant Pot 4-in-1 has a dedicated cold foam mode. A French press also works; a hand whisk makes large, unstable bubbles.
